Heat is on as Chefs Battle it Out for Pub Pie Champion Accolade

The culinary competition to become Britain’s 2012 Pub Pie Champion is heading for its climax – with just five chefs left in the running for the prestigious title.

Almost 120 pie recipes were received for the competition, which is an integral part of Jus-Rol’s British Pie Week – the annual celebration of licensed trade pie-making skills which comes to a climax next month, 5th-11th March.

The finalist recipes will now go on to be tasted by a panel of experts, which include the Craft Guild of Chef’s CEO, Martin Bates and current Pub Pie Champion, Craig Hennessey – the winner will be announced during British Pie Week.

It has highlighted once again the level of pie making skills and culinary imagination, that is on offer in Britain’s pubs and that is something we should all celebrate. The British Pie Week team received an unprecedented number of entries, almost double in comparison to last year. The five finalists, chosen on their originality, regionality, simplicity and consumer appeal are:

Will Winteringham; Derwent Arms, Osbaldwick, North Yorkshire (Pork, Wild Mushroom & Wholegrain Mustard Pie)
David Wardleworth; The Traders Arms, Mellor, Blackburn (Horn to Heel Pie)
Carol Haime; The Sandrock, Farnham, Surrey (Wheatley House Pheasant Pie)
Will Walne; Derby Arms, Chipping Lane, Preston (Woodplumpton Pie)
Karen Berg; Heron Inn, Truro, Cornwall (Rhubarb and Custard Pie)

The overall winner will receive a £500 cash prize, a personalised chef’s jacket, the coveted Jus-Rol British Pie Week trophy, and national and trade press coverage.
